When you live in a small loft, you need to make ingenious use of space. Designer Hannah Brown and her design team at Amory Brown, did just that for client Amelia Richardson. Located in southwest London, Richardson’s small Victorian maisonette was converted into a modern, livable space with smart built-ins and stylish details.

The galley kitchen is small, but efficient. Glass subway tile in sage works well with the clean lines of the modern white cabinets. For dining, a banquette is the perfect solutions. The rustic table top of reclaimed oak add warmth and texture.

“I wanted this to be airy, functional, and uncluttered, but with such limited space we had to come up with some clever storage solutions, such as utilizing the area under the banquette seating in the dining area.” —Amelia Richardson

Bertoia side chairs, available online at Knoll, are an icon of mid-century modern design. Cheerful sunflower yellow seats add just the right pop of color.
Wine storage was built into the frame for the banquette seating. Beyond the dining area, the living room is flooded with natural light. White walls offer a neutral backdrop for “Corolla Burst,” a limited edition digital print by Nick Jeffrey. The wall-mounted Prouvé Potence Lamp by Vitra is a bit pricey (as is just about everything), but sure does look good in the room.

“Coming from South Africa, I felt it was important to have a background of warm hues. The overall style had to be fresh and bright, and include lots of natural materials, too.” —Amelia Richardson

A built-in desk and shelving are tucked away neatly in a small corner. Horizontal striping in the Nobi fabric on the custom Roman blind visually expands the space. The Palm Trestle Swivel Chair by Lievore, Altherr, Molina is compact, lively, and expressive.

A large window—and mirror for reflection—provides a lot of light in the spa-like guest bath. A little nook, for shampoo, was built into the custom cabinet.

Glass mosaic tiles, in a pale aquamarine, extend from the backsplash and into the shower. The mirror is framed in marble tile.

“I wanted an environment that reflects who I am and this place really does that. It has a feeling of serenity and is the perfect retreat.” —Amelia Richardson

On the second-floor landing, a custom-built bookcase makes good use of space. Artwork is “Nautilus,” another limited edition print by Nick Jeffrey.

Coral Hoggar fabric by Leliévre on the bench makes a bold statement in the master bedroom. The wall of closets and built-ins flanking the bed provide plenty of storage.
