Entertaining at Home

Gracious Hospitality

Gracious hospitality

A warm, inviting home is comprised of so many things—order, serenity, creativity, and gracious hospitality.

Hospitality is mostly defined as the “friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” More to the point, it’s the act of being genuinely happy to have people visit and treating them with warmth, style, and elegance.

No, you don’t have to bring out the silver and fine china.

Hospitality has less to do with hosting a perfect party or get-together. It’s more about making sure your guests feel welcome and comfortable in your home. How do you do that? Smile. Greet them with a hug. Invite them in. Take their coats. Offer something to drink. Have food . . . or not. Make eye contact often. Listen—actually listen—when they’re speaking.

When I offer hospitality, something amazing happens…. An exchange takes place. Our guests bring who they are with them and enlarge our lives with their offerings. ―Janice Peterson

Whether friends stop by for a chat . . . or you’re having neighbors over for the evening . . . or you’re hosting a formal dinner, your home is the perfect setting for welcoming guests into the heart of your family.

Extending your gracious hospitality

When holidays and special occasions come calling for family and friends to gather, the opportunity to entertain at home adds a special touch of joy and happiness to the mix.

Have fun. Be creative. Throw a big party complete with written invitations, elaborate decorations, and a lavish menu. Your meticulous planning, loving preparation, and attention to detail—beautiful linen, fine china and crystal, a creative centerpiece, and the delicious foods you serve—are all wonderful ways to tell guests you think they are special and care enough to plan for their visit.

Or keep it simple. Even the most casual get-together or simple meal can be something special when it is filled with the spirit of welcome.

Gracious hospitality comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors. The goal is to give guests the best you have to offer, welcome them into your home with open arms, and make them feel special and loved.

In turn you, too, will feel loved.
